Create a Workspace that You Love
It is so important that you take time to organize a workspace that makes you comfortable and also brings you joy. If you are working in a space that feels cluttered, too small, or even distracting, this will make your days feel long and you will find it difficult to focus! Take some time to organize your space and load it up with all of the essentials. Organization is key here! Invest in quality organizers that will keep the clutter off your desk and in turn create a clean space that you are free to work without distraction.
One of my favorite hacks is to organize your computer desktop with a template that you can create using any graphic designer app. I used Canva to create the desktop you see above where I can organize all of my desktop files and apps. This not only creates a more aesthetically pleasing space, but makes it easier for me to access all the things I use on a daily basis!
Below are some fun tools and products to help vamp up your workspace and help make you ready for every day!
Create a Daily Schedule
This might be the most important takeaway of my guide to the perfect work from home space: CREATE A SCHEDULE and stick to it! This is the only way your days will have structure and keep you from feeling disorganized and out of overwhelmed. I try to plan out my week ahead of time (usually on Sundays) but if I don’t get around to it, I at least plan for tomorrow ahead of time. This way, I know exactly what time I am waking up every day and what my goals are that I want to achieve. If I go into the day with no structure, I often times end it feeling unaccomplished and frustrated.
p.s. I have curated a FREE tool to help you accomplish this step. All you gotta do is stick through until the end of this post to find out how you can get my EXACT printable daily planning template sent straight to your inbox. 100% FREE!
Here is a sneak peek…
Take Frequent Breaks
Of course there is the usual one hour lunch break (don’t skip this!) but also be sure to take regular 10-15 minute breaks throughout the day. This will help keep you energized and prevent burnout. Additionally, it is a good idea to stand up and walk around frequently. If you’re on a remote call, walk around your house while you talk, or switch up which room of the house you set your laptop up in. Trust me, it makes the time go by faster, and keeps the blood flowing!
Get Out of Your PJs
There, I said it. If you simply roll out of bed and plop down in front of your computer, you are going to be left feeling out of place all day. Instead, it might be more refreshing to wake up, make your bed, and change into a different pair of clothes. I am not saying it can’t be joggers and your favorite sweatshirt – by all means! Just change into something different from what you slept in the night before. If you love the idea of working from your PJs, then plan to have that be a once-a-week thing, like Fridays. This way, you don’t establish habits of feeling lazy & out of place! Trust me, I feel 1000 times better when I put in some effort in the mornings to “get ready.” It makes me feel refreshed and motivated!
Below are a few pieces of affordable lounge wear to change into for the day. Plus – if you need to take the dog out or make a quick run to the store, you will feel at least a bit more put together with these few pieces!
Arrange Video Calls With Your Friends/Colleagues
This has been a GAME CHANGER for me. Arrange a time every couple of days to sit down and video chat with a friend or a co-worker during work hours. This helps keep you from feeling lonely and also makes the time go by SO much faster. It’s also the best alternative to missing out on those dinner dates and weekend hangouts. Get creative with this and find new ways to stay connected!
Most Importantly: Get Creative!
Working from home is a unique experience, and can be SO rewarding if you find ways to make it unique. If you have children at home, find ways to incorporate them into your day. If you are at home alone, broaden your horizons with ways to make each day unique with goals that motivate you. Listen to podcasts, create an out-of-the-norm schedule, wake up early and chase a side hustle, explore new hobbies, and HAVE FUN! I’ve been working from home for quite a few months now and it took a while to get a new routine down, but every day is a new adventure if you let it be!
